Born in St. Joseph, Missouri, Walker’s lifelong love of learning began at home with his mother, Katherine Conley LaBrunerie, who tutored him and encouraged his curiosity from an early age. That foundation carried him to Harvard University, where he earned his undergraduate degree, a Master’s in Russian Studies, and a law degree in the 1950s.
After beginning his career in law, Walker followed his instincts and transitioned into real estate development during the 1960s—leaving a lasting mark on Kansas City’s north side, particularly along Barry Road, where he saw potential long before others did. Known for his vision, intellect, and generosity, Walker gave many young professionals their first opportunities, remaining a trusted mentor and friend throughout his life.
Walker was married to Doris Wickham LaBrunerie (deceased 1988), with whom he raised three daughters: Claire LaBrunerie of Celebration, Florida; Suzanne LaBrunerie (deceased 2020); and Denise LaBrunerie of Warrensburg, Missouri. He also leaves behind four granddaughters—Sabine Nix (London), Simone Nix (Miami), Élodie Nix (New York), and Inès Nix (St. Louis)—who brought him great joy.
He was preceded in death by his brother Fernand LaBrunerie and sister Katherine Nenneman, both of whom he loved dearly.
Walker’s passions were many—reading, travel, languages, history, and tennis. He played competitive tennis into his 80s, traveled extensively, and especially cherished time spent in the south of France and Italy’s Lake Como, where he would listen to piano music while taking in the views. A true lover of good food and conversation, he was a familiar face at Café des Amis and Westport Café, where he savored both French cuisine and friendship.
Those who knew Walker will remember him for his sharp wit, deep intellect, and boundless generosity of spirit. His friendships spanned generations, his mentorship shaped countless lives, and his influence will continue to be felt in both the people and the places he touched.
Services will be held at a later date (please check back for details).
In lieu of flowers, the family invites friends and loved ones to honor Walker’s memory by sharing a favorite story or reflection on this tribute page.
