Maynard and Ella Mae welcomed William Lynn “Bill” Binkley into this world on November 4, 1943 in Marfa, Texas. They didn’t realize the impact their only child would make on this world. The family moved from Marfa when Bill was 3 years old making their home in Excelsior Springs, MO where Bill grew up and graduated from Excelsior Springs High School in 1962. He went 2 years to William Jewel College and then received his BA Degree from Pittsburg State University in Pittsburg, KS.
His life long career (30 years and 1 day as Bill would say), began in January of 1967 with Hallmark Cards where he eventually retired as Controller of Halls Crown Center and Plaza stores. Bill was a faithful and respected employee of Hallmark rarely missing a day of work. He drove a car pool of friends to work for the entire time he worked at Hallmark. It was also there in the Hallmark Cafeteria where a pretty young lady caught his eye. Nancy Sue Carson was the love of his life and on November 18, 1967 they were joined in marriage, a marriage where love grew for 53 years. Bill and Nancy were blessed with one son, Jay Carson Binkley, born on March 4, 1973. They were devoted parents and Jay continues to return their love by taking care of them in their older years. Jay’s career is in Sports Radio Broadcasting and Jay shared that his Dad never missed listening to his weekly radio shows. Jay has given them more joy than they could ever imagine with their two beautiful granddaughters, Elizabeth Catherine Binkley and Nancy Carson Binkley. They cherished the time with the girls which included a special annual vacation to the beach in Destin, Florida.
Bill had a great passion for all sports and made life long friends playing tennis in his early years and even partnered with a group to build their own private tennis court near their home. He also played racketball, golf and enjoyed biking.
In 1988 Bill and Nancy bought a cabin at the Lake of the Ozarks that because of their generosity, became the family “place to be” for the next 10 years. His first boat (paddleboat that is) was named “the Love Boat” and Bill loved to go out in it and fish. Let’s just say he had a lot of “fishy” stories. Oh, the memories that were made there!
Thru the years, Bill has made many long-lasting friendships. When you became a friend of Bill, you had a true and loyal friend for life. Bill had a lunch group that for the last 27 years, met every Wednesday at Wendy’s for lunch and conversation (which Bill never lacked for).
Bill is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Carson Binkley of the home, his little dog and best buddy, Augie, son, Jay Carson Binkley, Kansas City, MO and two granddaughters, Ellie Binkley and Carson Binkley and his bonus sisters, Betty, Barb and Laurie as well as many, many friends, one of them being Paul Hay, a friend since kindergarten. We are all blessed that our lives included Bill.
