

The Reverend Victor Sheridan Ross Jr., 86, beloved husband of Helen (Linkovich) for nearly 62 years, died peacefully in his sleep in the early morning of April 23, 2011 at Seabury Nursing Center, Bloomfield, CT. Besides his wife he leaves three daughters; Anne Schley Ross and her husband Steve Mackin of Charlestown, SC., Mary Elizabeth Ross and her husband Tom Goulette of Hinesburg, VT., and Helen Ross Coiteux and her husband Bill of East Hartford, along with two wonderful grandchildren, William Victor and Katherine Ross Coiteux.
Vic was born in Baltimore, MD., the only child of the Rev. Victor Sheridan Ross and Anne Perry Claggett Schley on March 2, 1925. He grew up in Davidsonville, MD. where his father was rector of All Hallows' Parish. Through his mother, he was a direct descendant of The Rt. Rev. Thomas John Claggett, the first bishop to be consecrated in America in 1792. He graduated from the St. James School, St. James, MD., enlisted in the US Navy and served in the South Pacific on the USS Astoria in WWII. He graduated from the University of Maryland, College Park in 1950 with a BA degree and earned his MDiv from Virginia Theological Seminary, Alexandria, VA in 1953. He was ordained Deacon in 1953 and Priest in May, 1954 by the late Bishop Noble C. Powell. He served as Associate Rector, then later Rector of Linganore Parish (St. James, Mt. Airy; St. Paul's Poplar Springs; and Grace Church, New Market, MD. from 1953-1958). He then served as Rector of Emmanuel and Chaplain of Stuart Hall in Staunton, VA from 1958-1965. From 1965-1970 he was Vicar of St. George's Episcopal Church, Middlebury, CT. In 1970, he became Rector of St. James' Episcopal Church, Glastonbury, CT from which he retired in 1985. He was Chaplain at Armsmear from 1985-2001. Vic served as Interim at a number of churches in the Diocese, served on a number of committees and as a Diocesan Consultant before and after retirement.
A Memorial Service will be held at St. James' Episcopal Church, 2584 Main Street, Glastonbury at 11AM on Monday, May 9, 2011. Reception will follow immediately in the Parish Hall. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. James' Episcopal Church., P.O. Box 206, Glastonbury, CT. 06033 or to Christ Church Cathedral, 45 Church St. Hartford, CT. 06103.
