William Robert Ripberger, 83, passed away on March 13, 2026, in Glendale, Arizona. Frequently known to friends simply as "Bill" or "Rip,” he was known for his deep loyalty, sense of humour and preparing food in his “test kitchen." Bill lived a life defined by hard work and unwavering devotion to his family.
A Proud Boilermaker
Born in Kokomo, Indiana, to William and Ruth Ripberger, Bill was the first in his family to earn a college degree, graduating from Purdue University with a degree in industrial management. His time at Purdue—particularly his brotherhood in Alpha Tau Omega—left a lasting mark on him. He remained a die-hard Boilermaker until the very end, never missing a chance to cheer on his team. Following his education, Bill served his country in the Army Reserves, a period that fostered a lifelong patriotism.
A Life in Motion
Bill’s love for sports wasn't limited to the bleachers. An avid runner, golfer, and hiker, he found joy in being active and outdoors. During his sons’ childhoods, Bill was a constant presence on the sidelines and in the dugout, coaching many youth sports teams for Michael and Peter. He took great pride in teaching the next generation the values of sportsmanship and perseverance.
Love, Career, and Adventure
It was in Chicago that Bill’s life changed forever. He met Patricia (Patti) on February 26, 1970, and their connection was so immediate that they were engaged just a month later on March 27, 1970. They married that fall on October 3, 1970. This whirlwind romance sparked a lifelong partnership built on laughter and a shared passion for travel and food. Bill spent over 30 years as a successful commercial real estate broker, a career that eventually drew the couple from the Midwest to Los Angeles. Eventually, their hearts led them to Phoenix to be near their son Peter and his family, where Bill spent his final years surrounded by the people he loved most.
The Joy of "Grandpa"
While he was an avid sports fan and a dedicated DIY home-improvement enthusiast, Bill’s favorite role was that of "Grandpa." Whether it was a FaceTime call or a new batch of photos, Bill’s face lit up at every update on his four grandsons. He was their biggest fan, constantly marveling at how great they were.
At home, Bill was a legend in what he jokingly called his "test kitchen." He famously viewed recipes as mere suggestions, leading to many memorable experiments that were, by all accounts, "a little too spicy" for everyone else, yet always prepared with love and a sense of adventure.
Family
Bill is preceded in death by his parents, William and Ruth; his brother, Steve; and his son, Peter.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia; his son, Michael; daughters-in-law Jen and Heather; and his four grandsons who were the lights of his life: Owen, Bobby, Vaughn, and Sebastian.
A memorial service will be held on March 24, 2026 at 9 am in honor of Bill at West Resthaven Funeral Home, 6450 West Northern Avenue, Glendale, Arizona. An Inurnment will follow at 10 at Resthaven Park Cemetery.
