Ellen P. Swaney

Ellen Pauline Swaney, nee Vargo, born New Year’s Day, 1920, in Uniontown, PA, died in her sleep at her home in Phoenix, AZ, on June 9, 2012, after a prolonged illness and a decade’s long decline due to Alzheimer’s Disease at age 92. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mary and John, and six siblings: Mary Vargo Kollar, Joe Vargo, John Vargo, Steve Vargo, Helen Vargo Cole and George Vargo. She and Samuel Marshall Swaney of Coolspring, PA, married on October 3, 1936, in Cumberland, Maryland. They raised six children, twelve grandchildren and thirteen great grandchildren. If home is where the heart is – and it is, they also lovingly raised even more than these. Their life was their family. Their six children are Mary Ellen Sooter, Samuel Martin Swaney, Charles Richard Swaney and wife Martha, John Stephan Swaney and wife Kathy, Terry Marshall Swaney and wife Julie and Ronald James Swaney. Their twelve grandchildren are Milton, Clifford, Shelley, Richard, Terri, Shawn, Joshua, Allison, Ashley, Brandy, Timm and Holly. Their thirteen great grandchildren are Trey, Casey, Chase, Alayna, Abigail, Brianna, Marshall, Morgan, Sammy, Arianna, Braidon, Jeremiah and Abigail. In addition to cousins, nephews, nieces, in-laws and countless numbers of friends that she dearly loved and leaves behind, special mention must be given to her sister, Helen’s family: Frances (now deceased), Sammy, Judy and Bobby Cole; her sister-in-law, Betty Casteel Kufrin; and life-long friend, Lois Palmer Jones. Her husband, Samuel Marshall Swaney, passed away on December 27, 2003 in Phoenix, Arizona. They had been married 67 years. Visitation will be held on Friday, June 15, 2012, at 10:00 A.M. with Funeral Services at 11:00 A.M. at Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary, 7924 N. 59th Ave., Glendale, AZ 85301.
