Gilbert Edward Atherton, born to the late John H. Atherton and Agnes Atherton on January 28, 1929 in Scituate, MA, passed away at home November 5, 2016 in Phoenix, AZ at the age of 87. Gilbert attended Rindge Tech High School in Cambridge, MA then he served in the U.S. Marine Corps during WWII. He retired from Walpole State prison as a Sergeant Corrections Officer and enjoyed woodworking and history.
Gilbert is survived by his wife Jane E. Atherton of Phoenix, AZ; daughter Nancy (Scott) Atherton Cargill of Phoenix, AZ ; son Edward (Laura) Atherton of Danville, OH; grandchildren Kaitlyn, Danielle, Melissa, Carmen, Shawn (Julie), Erik (Sarah) along with many other great-grandchildren and great great-grandchildren.
He is preceded in death by his parents, granddaughter Tiffany Wilkens and grandson Edward J. Atherton.
A visitation will be held at Chapel of the Chimes Mortuary 7924 N 59th, Ave ,Glendale, AZ 85301 on Monday November 14, 2016 at 5:00 pm. A funeral service will take place Tuesday November 15, 2016 at Chapel of the Chimes with interment to follow at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona.
