Born in Germany, Helga’s journey was defined by a courageous heart. In 1956, she emigrated to the United States to marry the love of her life, Allen Geousnick. Together, they built a vibrant life in Chicago. While Allen served his country in the Korean War and later dedicated his career as a switchman for the railroad, Helga channeled her entrepreneurial drive into her passion for fashion. She became a fixture of Chicago’s Michigan Avenue as the proud owner of "Helga’s Custom Made Clothing," where her meticulous craftsmanship and strong will earned her the respect of the downtown community.
After 26 years of beautiful marriage, Allen preceded her in death at the age of 56. Two years later, seeking a new chapter, Helga visited Arizona. She was instantly captivated by the golden sunshine, the majestic mountains, and the swaying palm trees of the desert. She chose to make Scottsdale her permanent home, where she eventually retired from a distinguished second career with Neiman Marcus.
Helga was known for her sharp wit, her impeccable style, and the deep roots she planted in her neighborhood. She leaves behind her dear sister Edith Gretzschel of Augsburg, as well as several nieces and nephews. While she had no children of her own, she was a matriarch to an abundance of neighbors and friends who loved her dearly.
Helga’s legacy of independence and grace will remain in the hearts of all who knew her.
