James “Jim” John Babitt, 88, passed away on July 28, 2024 at his home in Glendale, AZ. Jim was born in Cleveland, Ohio on November 12, 1935 to Joseph and Mildred (Buck) Babitt. One of his favorite past-times growing up was studying science. He lettered in football at Wellington High School where he also graduated. He went on to attend General Motors Institute in Michigan where he graduated with a degree in engineering. On November 23, 1957, at the age of 22, he married the love of his life, Virginia “Jean” Settlemire. They later started their family by welcoming Kyle Babitt and Karen Babitt-Richards. Jim and Jean were also “parents” to many others such as foster children, friends of their children, etc. Jim used his engineering degree working for B.F Goodrich for 54 years, where he also retired.
In Jim’s spare time he enjoyed playing golf, riding his motorcycle, cheering for Ohio State and the Cleveland Indians; and using his hands out in his garage on different woodworking projects. You could also find him conquering the newspaper’s daily crossword puzzle each morning with breakfast. In Jim and Jean’s time together they enjoyed going shooting, car shows, and watching movies. Most importantly, together, they enjoyed serving Jesus. Over the years, they sang in the choir together; and Jim lead music and served as a deacon. Most recently, they were members of Love Baptist Church.
Jim is survived by his daughter Karen (Billy “Joe”) Richards, his son Kyle (Bonnie) Babitt, his grandchildren Austin Martindale, Evan (Devin) White, Luke Richards, Megan (Elisha) Allen, Jake (Laura) Babitt, Nathan Babitt and his great grandchild Grant Babitt. He is also survived by his brother Tom (Kathy) Babitt.
Jim will always be remembered by his family for his love for Jesus, his love for his family, his pride in his country, his sense of humor and his never-ending sweet tooth.
Services to celebrate the life of Jim will be held at 11am on Saturday, August 17, 2024 at Love Baptist Church: 3030 W. Glendale Ave, Phoenix, Arizona.
