

Mark Joseph Ratermann, 81, of Glendale AZ, passed away on August 18, 2011. He was born March 21, 1930 in Breese, Illinois to Joseph and Wilhemina (Woltering) Ratermann. Mark graduated from Mater Dei Catholic High School in Breese (1948) and attended the University of Illinois. He moved to Phoenix in 1957 to pursue a career building swimming pools. His professional goals changed when he became a civil engineer with Earl V. Miller Engineering. Mark designed many of Arizona’s roads and dams during his career and retired in 2002. He married Barbara A. Howell in 1982 and they lived happily together in Glendale. His favorite activity was spending time at his cabin in Sherman Pines (near Prescott), which he and his friends built in 1970. Mark is survived by his wife Barbara, daughters Kelly Strong (Mark), Diane Barbee (Adam), Mary Scrivens (Richard), step-daughters Alison Kalina (Steve) and Linda Howell, sisters Bernardine Richter, Patricia Fehrmann, and Sister Mary Jane Ratermann, A.S.C., brothers Dan Ratermann and Father Jerome Ratermann, thirteen grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be held at 9 a.m. on Friday, September 2, 2011 at Chapel of the Chimes, 7924 North 59th Avenue, Glendale, AZ. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a contribution to Serenity Hospice & Palliative Care, Phoenix, AZ or their favorite educational charity.
