Marshall Lloyd Akins, born on March 7, 1943, in Greensboro, North Carolina, to the late Helen Akins and Marshall Reazer. Marshall lived a life marked by dedication, service, and love. A graduate of high school and an alumnus of North Carolina A&T State University, Marshall chose to serve his country by enlisting in the United States Air Force, where he devoted twenty honorable years of service.
In 1966, Marshall met and married, Martha Martin. Their union was blessed with a son, Shawn Christopher Akins. In 1969, the family settled in Phoenix, Arizona, where Marshall and Martha built a life together, sharing fifty-five years of marriage.
During his distinguished military career, Marshall was stationed in various locations, including Okinawa, Japan; Phan Rang, Vietnam; Tucson, AZ; and Glendale, AZ. He excelled in multiple roles, including Aircraft Crew Chief, Weapons Systems Controller, Aero Repair Shop Supervisor, and Unit Production Superintendent. Marshall retired with the esteemed rank of Master Sergeant.
After his military service, Marshall continued to contribute to his community by working as a city bus driver with Valley Metro and as a licensed HVAC professional. His work ethic and commitment to excellence were evident in all he did.
Marshall had a passion for bowling and baseball, but he was especially fond of poker. He cherished the camaraderie of his Air Force buddies, with whom he enjoyed monthly "traveling" poker games, complete with feasts that were as legendary as the games themselves.
In retirement, Marshall remained active in his community, particularly through The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA), where he held several offices and was a steadfast supporter of the organization's mission. He was also a dedicated member of the American Legion, advocating for positive opportunities for both active and retired military personnel.
Marshall was a pillar of strength and support for his family, a loving husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He was also a loyal friend, always ready to lend a helping hand in both good times and times of need.
Marshall leaves behind his beloved wife, Martha; his son, Shawn; his grandson, Christopher; and his great-great-grandchildren, Audrina and Hakeem. He is also survived by his sisters, Marche Clarke and Brenda Clarke, along with a host of nieces, nephews, and cherished friends. Marshall's presence in the lives of those who knew and loved him will be deeply missed, but his legacy of service, love, and friendship will endure.
