She was born in Fort Dodge, Kansas on September 2, 1924. Mary was raised by Earl and Sarah Truitt in Atchison, Kansas. Mary graduated from Mt. St. Scholastica High School in 1942. In January of 1945 Mary married Ernest Black and they were blessed with four children.
Mary’s faith was strong, and she was a devout Catholic. She shared God’s love through her cooking. Mary loved cooking and throughout her life she nourished many people. She started working in the hospital in Atchison in the kitchen and continued her career in food when she moved to Arizona in 1981. She was a chef for Humana hospital in Phoenix.
Mary is survived by her children Earleen (Wynette) Ottoson, Douglas Black, Brian Thomas Black, Dale (Susan) Black (all from Arizona); her brothers Scotty Booth of Rockaway Beach, Missouri, and Harold Flanagan of Washington, Missouri. She was preceded in death by her sister Pat. Mary also has many special granddogs that survive her.
