Mrs. Shirley Ann Cook, 78, of Phoenix passed away on May 10, 2014. She was born in Akron, Ohio to the late Donald W. and Anna Eliza Fisk on May 21, 1935. Shirley is survived by the love of her life, and husband of 55 years, Daniel. They were married on October 25, 1958. She is also survived by her two children Michael and Lori (Kevin), grandchildren Jennifer (Kevin), Christopher, Kenny, Samantha, Amanda, and one great grandchild Peyton.
In her early years she graduated from Kent State University in Ohio with her bachelor’s degree in English. Shirley’s first job was with Ohio Bell. In 1985 she and Daniel moved to Phoenix which was good for her because she absolutely did not like driving in the snow. She would hang up the keys at the first snow, and that’s where they would stay all winter long. Shirley and Dan would pack Mike, Lori and the dogs in the car and go on the fall hiking sprees in Akron in the various state parks in the area. Dan and Shirley loved to attend concerts, craft fairs, poetry readings, and all sorts of cultural events. Shirley did not like to fly, but when she found out that Lori was giving birth to their granddaughter Jennifer in Hawaii, she climbed on a plane to meet her granddaughter. Dan and Shirley made 3 trips to the islands that she fell in love with.
Shirley loved to write poetry and much like Daniel had a passion for reading. She volunteered for many events with the Friends of the Phoenix Library alongside her husband. Singing was also something that she enjoyed and was even part of a singing group called the Mother Singers. Shirley liked jewelry of any kind, and collected hat pins for her Sunday church hats. One of the first pieces of jewelry Shirley bought from her job at Ohio Bell was a beautiful Star Ruby ring, which Lori now has. Being a Christian and serving God was very important to her. She taught children’s bible school and women’s bible classes. She also wrote poetry and articles in the “Sister’s with Voices” pamphlet that a Christian friend and her printed for Christian women.
Family and friends are invited to attend a memorial service on Tuesday, May 20, 2014 at 11:00AM at West Resthaven Funeral Home at 6450 W. Northern Avenue in Glendale.
