Dad was born in Bucyrus, Missouri on August 5, 2023 to Fred and Lucy Sillyman. His younger sister was Wilma Jean and an older brother Herchel who did not live past two years of age. Life in central rural Missouri was not easy and it was not until WWII and 1943 that Dad saw some of the world. For the first time Dad saw St. Louis, Miami, Seattle and Phoenix and then the Pacific island of Tinian where he was an aircraft mechanic.
Dad first met his future wife in Chandler Arizona. Mom was new to the United States and had moved from Ponce, Puerto Rico to live with her married sister. Shortly two other sisters soon joined her in Phoenix.
After WWII, Mom and Dad settled in Phoenix and other than a short stint in Houston, Missouri, made Phoenix their home. Dad worked for the Post Office for 30 years and Mom worked for the City of Phoenix Water. Dad is survived by Michael and Steven and their wives Amy Gittler and Marcia Sillyman as well as his grandsons Trevor and Nathan and his granddaughter Adele and his great granddaughter Jaymisen and his great grandsons Finnegan and Magne. Trevor’s wife is Kimberly and Addie’s husband is Dan.
Mom and Dad cared for both friends and family who were either restricted in their ability to travel or who were too physically or mentally unable to handle their affairs. Dad cared for, looked in on, and made sure that family members and friends were able to attend appointments and were never neglected. He was very gregarious, inquisitive and loved by everyone who met him. He loved to dance, loved the ladies and always promoted the ROTC and the military to all who would listen, most likely because he never traveled outside of rural Missouri before being drafted into the military.
Dad took pride in his family and often said his was the best family ever. In his 90’s, Dad moved into Fellowship Square and made many friends who referred to him as the “Mayor”. Our family extends its thanks to Devoted Guardians, Hospice of the Valley and Lincoln Heights Assisted Living caregivers for providing loving and attentive care to Dad in his final years
On September 13, 2024, Dad joined his beloved wife Raquel (Trani) Sillyman. He will be buried at the National Cemetery in Phoenix Arizona on September 26. Services will be conducted at Chapel of the Chimes and the National Cemetery. He will be missed by many.
