

William Burton Hughes, 81, passed away on September 22, 2010. Bill, a 2nd generation Arizona native, was born January 22, 1929 in Glendale, Arizona to James Melvin and Buelah (Graham) Hughes. He was the 8th of 10 children. Bill attended Alhambra Elementary School, Glendale High School, Glendale Community College and Arizona State University. At the age of 17, joined the Navy where he served 20 years on submarines. After retiring from the Navy, he went to work for the State of Arizona as a law enforcement officer. He retired from the Department of Public Safety after 20 years in law enforcement. Bill was an avid outdoorsman who enjoying hunting and fishing with his sons and grandchildren. He was known for his quick wit and straight talk. He will be missed. Bill is survived by his wife of 60 years, Lucille (Cox) Hughes, 4 sons and their wives; Craig (Pam), Mark, (Mary) Tim (Amy) and Jerry (Penny); 8 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; 4 Sisters; Melda Cagalj, Lou Ella Kleinz, Margaret Wisener and Mary Sue Clifford; and many more relatives and friends. He is preceded in death by brothers James, Albert and Earl, and sisters Betty Berry and Emma Lois Ison. Visitation will be held at West Resthaven Funeral Home, 6450 W. Northern Ave., Glendale, AZ, on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 from 6 to 8 pm. Services will be held at West Resthaven Funeral Home on Wednesday September 29, 2010 at 9 am. Interment will be at the National Memorial Cemetery, 23029 N. Cave Creek Rd., at 11 am, September 29, 2010.
