Clara Therese Schiffhauer, daughter of John Kubicki and Michaelina Bannach Kubicki, was born June 23, 1915 in Chicago, IL. She was the sister of John (Freda), Emil (Lorrie), Frank (Irene), Agnes (Sister Rosette, S.Sp.S.) and Lillian (William Gilbert). She is the last of her generation, outliving all her siblings and all of their spouses. Clara was raised in Chicago attending the local Catholic grammar school where she was required to learn Polish. She fell in love with her neighbor, Joseph Schiffhauer when she was 16 years old. They were married four years later in Chicago on August 10, 1935. They resided in Chicago where she worked for Athletic Shoe Factory with her brothers and Joe worked in his uncle’s butcher shop. They always reminisced that there was always meat on their table. Clara and Joe moved to California in 1947 after Joe returned from World War ll, eventually buying a house in south Montebello where they made many friends. Due to the untimely death of Clara’s sister Lillian, her nephew Robert Gilbert was brought to her in California in 1951 to help raise him until his father, Bill Gilbert joined them a couple of years later. Clara and Joe built the apartments on North Third Street in 1955 that brought many tenants who became lifelong friends. Clara then pursued her dream of becoming a nurse, following in the footsteps of her grandmother who was a midwife. She graduated from East Los Angeles College with her licensed vocational nurse certificate in 1956. She continued her studies and achieved her RN Associate in Science degree. She worked at Beverly Hospital until she retired in 1989. Clara and Joe traveled throughout the United States, Mexico, Canada, and Europe. She especially enjoyed fishing in Alaska and their trip to Poland. They became avid polka dancers and were very dedicated to the Orange County Polka club and the Polka Boosters, being named the Polka King and Queen in 1986. They were married for 63 years when Joe passed away in 1999. She was a member of St. Benedict’s Church in Montebello for almost 65 years and was active in the Altar Society, Catholic Daughters, Girl Scouts and Fr. Herle’s Mission Circle. After Clara retired, she answered the call of the St. Benedict’s school principal to read to the 1st graders which was very meaningful to her because she could share life lessons. She was also involved in Erin and James’ school activities at Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish, helping with cooking for the fundraisers and sewing aprons for Grandma’s Attic volunteers and tablecloths and participating in field trips. Clara is survived by her daughter, Susan and her husband, Dennis whom she loved dearly, her grandchildren, Erin Francesca Clare and Jon Dokter and James and Jenn De Pietro and greatgranddaughter, Eleanor Clare. Her pride and joy were her grandchildren for whom she loved to cook and bake. Surviving family include nephews, Robert Gilbert (Denise-d), Wayne Kubicki (Beth Wolffe), Paul Schoch (Pat),Tom Schiffhauer (Sandy), Erich Trabert (Anna), and nieces, Arlene Sebestin, Sharon Prokopiak (Bernie) Debbie Marshall (Jim) and Lynne Farstad (Michael). Clara referred to herself as a jack of all trades. She could cook, bake and sew, decorate cakes even a wedding cake, embroider, crochet, do ceramics, repair fences lovingly with elephant glue, paint the apartments and garden her favorite roses and apple tree. She will be lovingly remembered for her strong faith, for her thousands of Christmas cookies, her date nut bread and homemade apple butter and for the many patients she tenderly cared for at Beverly Hospital. She was known for her infectious sense of humor and strongly believed in the power of jokes and laughter. Clara was most appreciative for the loving care and friendship she received from the Sisters, nurses and CNA’s and Father Frank at Nazareth House where she resided and where she passed away June 6, 2015, making it into her 100th year. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Nazareth House, 3333 Manning Avenue, Los Angeles, CA 90064 or Holy Spirit Missionary Sisters in the U.S.A., 319 Waukegan Road, Northfield, IL 60093.
