Fredrick W. Carlile

Fredrick W. Carlile, Jr. (87), of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, August 10, 2023. Fred was born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana on April 2, 1936 to Fredrick Sr. and Hattie Albin Carlile. After the death of his father when Fred was six years old, he helped his mother to raise his two younger sisters. He was a graduate of Baton Rouge High School and attended Louisiana State University where he learned to love everything purple and gold. Fred worked as a draftsman and architect in his early career, but spent most of his life employed by Uniroyal Chemical Company in Geismar, Louisiana as a Maintenance Engineer.

Fred is survived by his three daughters—Claudene Cockrum (Corbit), Camille Michelli (Mike), and Clarice Gautreaux. He is also survived by his sister, Ruby Cointment and his long-time friend, Harriet Percy. Fred had six grandchildren: Jack Cockrum, III (Madeline), Emma Cockrum, Lauren Michelli, Jacob Michelli, Matthew Michelli, and Evan Gautreaux. He is also survived by the mother of his children, Glenda Bland Carlile. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Helen Jones.

From early in his adulthood, Fred fell in love with sailing and enjoyed being out on the open water with his family, friends, and, especially, his three girls. He owned several sailboats throughout his life, right up until he could sail no more. Fred also loved LSU football games, bass fishing, dogs of all kinds (especially his pet poodle, Tasha), was a voracious reader, lover of great food and wine, and traveled the world—specifically to Southern France, any time he could. “Il a le savoir de vivre”—in other words, “he knew how to live.”

Fred’s family will host a celebration of his life on Thursday, August 17, 2023, at Ourso Funeral Home in Gonzales, Louisiana. Visitation will be from 5:00-7:00, with a short memorial service to follow. The family would like to thank the caregivers at Life Source Hospice and Landmark South.
