

Garney Gautreau, a resident of Gonzales, passed away early Thursday morning, March 31, 2016. He was 78 years young. As a lifelong resident of Gonzales, Garney helped start the first youth football program in the late 60's. For years he coached Dixie Youth Baseball, leaving a lasting impression on all the youth he coached. Garney was a "Jack of All Trades". He worked 17 years for Kleinpeter Dairy Farms as a routeman and then a supervisor. He owned and operated Garney's Sporting Goods. He was a member of the Ascension Parish School Board for 26 years. He worked with two Parish Presidents in various departments. Garney never met a job he didn't like. He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Eleanor Murphy Gautreau; his four sons, Ricky Gautreau and wife Susie, Kenny Gautreau and wife Melee', Jeffrey Gautreau and wife Leslie, and Shelly Paul Gautreau; sister, Betty Bercegeay; brother, N.C. Gautreau; seven grandchildren, Kelli Mire (Dean), Jessica Hodgkins (Ryan), Michael Mason, Jeremy Mason (Keri), Ashlyn Greene (Mitch), Haleigh Powers (Cody), and Cameron Gautreau; and eight great grandchildren, Brody, Harlee, Nora, Remy, Sheperd, Ainsley, Hunter, and Brantley. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eddie Gautreau, Sr. and Emma Courtney Gautreau; grandson, Jordan Gautreau; and a brother, Eddie Gautreau, Jr. Visiting will be at Ourso Funeral Home, Gonzales, on Sunday, April 3, 2016, from 5 pm to 9 pm. The visitation will resume on Monday at St. Mark Catholic Church from 9 am until Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11 am, Revs. Rubin Reynolds and Jason Palermo, officiating. Interment to follow in Oak Lane Memorial Park, Prairieville. Pallbearers will be Barry Bourgeois, Cameron Gautreau, Cody Powers, Ryan Hodgkins, Dean Mire, Mitch Greene, Wayne Aydell, and Neil Martinez. George Valentine, Tommy Martinez, Barney Arceneaux, Roy Quezaire, Jeff Diez, Jeff Wiley, Murphy Painter, and Kenny Matassa will serve as honorary pallbearers. Garney loved life, his wife, his children, his grandchildren and his great grandchildren. His "glass is half full" attitude and his never ending smile were infectious and will be missed by many.
