

Joseph Barry Fontenot, a beloved native and lifelong resident of Whitehall, passed away peacefully at his home on August 20, 2024, at the age of 81. A proud graduate of Maurepas High School, Barry was well-known for his passion for basketball, which began in high school and continued with independent leagues later in life. He had a deep love for the outdoors, spending countless hours tending to his garden, where he cultivated summer and fall vegetables. Barry also enjoyed fishing and assembling jigsaw puzzles, activities that brought him much joy and relaxation. Barry was preceded in death by his father, Henry Fontenot; mother, Manila Fontenot; and sister, MaryAnn Johnson. He is survived by his devoted wife, Loretta Fontenot; daughter, Dorla (Mike) Pizzolatto; son, Scott (Melinda) Fontenot; two cherished grandchildren, Tyler Huls and Kaitlyn Hartman; and his brothers, Valmond Fontenot, Darrel Fontenot and Henry Fontenot, Jr. The family extends their heartfelt thanks to the staff of St. Joseph Hospice for their compassionate care. Family and friends are invited to a visitation at St. Stephen Catholic Church on August 24, 2024, from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., with a Mass of Christian Burial to follow. Barry will be laid to rest in Whitehall Cemetery. Pallbearers honored to serve in Joseph's memory will be Tyler Huls, Brett Fontenot, Jarred Fontenot, Brandt Kohan, Chris Fontenot, Devan Delatte.
