Joseph Walker Whitney III passed away leaving behind a legacy defined by devotion to family, service, and a life well lived. Born in Portland, Maine, in 1940, Joe later moved to California, where he graduated from Pasadena High School and began shaping the path that would define the years ahead.
Joe proudly served his country in the United States Navy for two years, demonstrating an early commitment to service. Following his military service, he pursued higher education, earning both a bachelor’s degree and a doctorate in law. He dedicated 36 years of service to the Orange County Sheriff’s Department in California, where he built a respected career grounded in integrity and commitment to his community.
Throughout his life, Joe lived in several places across the country, including Orange, California; Henderson, Nevada; Palos Heights, Illinois; and Denham Springs, Louisiana—each place reflecting a chapter of his journey.
Joe shared his life with his beloved wife of 63 years, Renee Koontz Whitney. He is survived by his three children, Joseph (Michelle) Whitney IV, Richard “Dick” Whitney, and Melanie (Omar) Francis; his sister, Stephanie (Whitney) Arnold; nine grandchildren, Joseph (Erin) Whitney V, Kyrstin (Bryce) Broussard, Jacob (Caroline) Whitney, Kaylah Whitney, Kellyn (Matthew) Peltier, Andrew Whitney, Brielle Whitney, Gabriel Francis, and Zachary Francis; 14 great-grandchildren; and many other loved ones who brought him immense pride and joy. He was preceded in death by his wife, Renee Koontz Whitney; his parents, Joseph W. Whitney Jr. and Hope Whitney; his sisters, Sandra (Whitney) McConnell and Fran Kingsley Fidler; and his grandchildren, Joshua and Jonathan Whitney.
Joe lived a life rich with interests and passions. He loved working on cars and building projects, including a dune buggy, and was a member of a car club. He also rode motorcycles both on the road and off, sharing camaraderie through a law enforcement–affiliated motorcycle club. An avid outdoorsman, Joe enjoyed hunting dove, duck, and big game such as deer and elk, as well as deep-sea fishing—especially tuna fishing trips with friends and family.
He treasured time spent RVing with Renee and going on camping trips with family, where simple moments turned into lasting memories. He also enjoyed woodworking and even taught classes, sharing his skills and enthusiasm with others. In quieter moments, Joe enjoyed watching World War II programs, Westerns, and shows about submarines.
Known for his sense of humor, Joe would jokingly say that computers made him “crash,” a reflection of his down-to-earth personality. He appreciated life’s simple pleasures, including In-N-Out Burger, a side of thousand island dressing, his favorite meal of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, and canned peas, and of course a cold scotch.
Above all, Joe was a man of faith who trusted in Jesus and was deeply devoted to his family. His life was marked by love, loyalty, and a steadfast commitment to those closest to him.
He will be remembered for his strength, his warmth, and the countless memories he leaves behind in the hearts of those who knew him.
A service to celebrate Joe and Renee’s lives will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026, at Calvary Church Baton Rouge, 3535 S. Sherwood Forest Blvd, Baton Rouge, LA 70816. Family and friends are invited to attend and honor the memory of a remarkable couple whose love and devotion will continue to live on through all whose lives they touched.
