Murphy was a proud veteran and worked as a Navy Millwright before retiring from J.E. Merit. He married the love of his life, Elizabeth Monson Yelverton, on June 20, 1959, and together they built a life centered around family.
He was a dedicated member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and the American Legion. In his free time, Murphy enjoyed camping, gardening, and grilling—especially when surrounded by his loved ones.

Affectionately known as “Paw Paw Gene,” he was cherished for his quick wit and captivating storytelling. Whether sharing tales from his time in the military, recalling the moment he met his beloved wife, or settling into his blue couch in the den to watch westerns or football while his grandchildren schemed to sneak up behind him, Murphy brought joy to all who knew him.
