Norman Melancon fondly known as “Pappy” and “Kojak” passed away on October 23, 2021 at the age of 79. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Dianne Melancon. He was the father of Rene Lyon (David), Denise “Neicey” Melancon, Michele Babin (Anthony), Paulette Melancon ( Travis West), Debbie Unbehagen and the late Barry Unbehagen. He was the grandfather of 10 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Son of the late Margaret Melancon and the late Carl Melancon. Brother of Pete Melancon, Dolores Acosta, the late Nella Sherman, the late Donnie Melancon and the late Larry Melancon. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews and family members.
Norman proudly served in the US Army National Guard for 21 years retiring as an E8. He was a firefighter for over 40 years and was the Assistant Fire Chief in the Gonzales Fire Department. He was also a Sheriff’s deputy in Ascension Parish for many years. He loved his community and always looked for the best way to give back to those he served. He has helped countless people and saved many lives throughout the years. He also loved to cook, he was the Jambalaya Champion in 1977. He and his wife travel the country competing in Chili cook offs, they have won many times. Norman also loved the outdoors, he enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping with family and friends. He was such a loving and selfless person who will be dearly missed by all of those who knew and loved him.
Family and friends are invited to attend a night wake at Ourso Funeral Home in Gonzales on Tuesday, October 26, 2021 from 5pm until 8pm. Visitation will continue on Wednesday, October 27, 2021 at the First United Methodist Church in Gonzales beginning at 9am with a service to follow at 11am. The burial will follow at Hope Haven Garden of Memory in Gonzales.
