Ruth Banker Scanlan

Loving wife, devoted mother, grandmother and great grandmother, passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on Monday, October 14, 2013, at the age of 85. She was a native and resident of Gonzales, and graduated from Gonzales High as Salutatorian. She attended LSU and graduated from Spencer Business College. As the daughter of F.N. and Anona Banker, Ruth has had the unique opportunity to watch a small family business operated out of her mother’s kitchen evolve into a high tech telecommunications enterprise, known as EATELCORP, the parent company of EATEL. In June of 1976 she was elected to the Board of Directors and in January of 1994, she became Chairman of the Board. Ruth also served on the Board of Directors of the Ascension Fund and was a long time member of the Louisiana Telephone Association. Ruth was also a former member of the Gonzales Women’s Club, Traveling Tigers and Bengal Bells. Ruth also worked a short time in the LSU Chemistry Department until her marriage to the late, Arthur G. “A.G.” Scanlan. Ruth was an avid fisherwoman and LSU fan. She loved being outdoors and would even take her boat by herself to get some fishing in whenever she could. She is survived by her daughter, Beryl S. Smith; sons, Arthur G. “Smokey” Scanlan and his wife, Rebecca Gray Scanlan and John David Scanlan and his wife, Terri Adams Scanlan; a brother, Mikeal K. Banker; five grandchildren, Cheryl Lynn Rice, Steven Allen Crowe, Arthur G. Scanlan, III, Jason Paul Scanlan, and Damon Paul Scanlan; two great grandchildren, Aubrey Ines Scanlan and Arthur G. “Brody” Scanlan, IV; three sister in laws, Gladys Scanlan Nevelle, Marie Scanlan Walker, and Evelyn “Bubbie” Braud Banker; and numerous nieces, nephews and extended family.She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur G. “A.G.” Scanlan; parents; infant sister; and brothers, Fred Norris “Mike” Banker, Jr. and Albert “Buck” Banker.Visiting will be at Ourso Funeral Home, Gonzales on Wednesday, October 16, 2013 from 5 pm to 9pm. Visiting will resume on Thursday at St. Mark Catholic Church, Gonzales from 9 am until Mass of Christian Burial at 11 am. Entombment to follow in Hope Haven Mausoleum, Gonzales.

Pallbearers will be Steven Crowe, Arthur Scanlan, III, Jason, Damon, and Mike Scanlan, Craig Henry, and Lance and Mikeal Banker.Cheryl Rice, Brian, Phillip, Timothy, and Albert Banker Jr, and Patrick Gomez will serve as honorary pallbearers.
