

Rev. James "Gerald" Parmer, age 80, passed away Tuesday, November 28, 2017. He was born in Wedowee, Alabama Tuesday, September 14, 1937 and is preceded in death by his parents, Holly and Ina Hill Parmer; his wife, Montine Parmer; sister, Judy Nixon; brothers, John (Dean), Billy Joe, Bobby, and Charlie Lee Parmer.
Rev. Parmer was devoted to serving God through The Church of the Nazarene. He pastored churches in Alabama, Georgia and Tennessee. In addition to his pastoral duties, Rev. Parmer served the denomination’s district level as Chairman/Director of Sunday School Ministries. Rev. Parmer loved his role as pastor serving the families of his congregations. He had a special love for youth and this manifested itself in various roles of leadership within Nazarene Youth International (NYI). Rev. Parmer actively promoted and encouraged athletic and social events that drew friends and families together for fun and fellowship. Many who shared in these events became lifelong, cherished friends to the family.
Rev. Parmer believed in the value of Christian education, especially for the denomination and was privileged to serve as a member of the Trevecca Nazarene Board of Trustees.
A lifetime of service to God and The Church of the Nazarene was recognized and honored by Lanett Church of the Nazarene when they bestowed the title of “Pastor Emeritus” upon Rev. Parmer.
Bethel Church of the Nazarene honored Reverend and Montine Parmer when they dedicated the newly refurbished fellowship hall by inscribing the Parmer’s names into the floor.
These honors moved Rev. Parmer because it came from people he loved and cared about.
He is survived by his daughter, Joy Moore and her husband, Paul; sons, Randy Parmer, Danny Parmer and his wife, Diandra; sisters, Nadine, Mary Lou, Margie, Jane and Susan; brothers, Bill (Earl), Hollis, and Reuben; seven grandchildren, Lindsey Garner, Amanda Garner, Brent Moore, Cory Moore, Caleb Parmer, Kailey Parmer and Coen Parmer; six great-grandchildren, Matthew Garner, Alexa Garner, Liam Pleasant, Leah Garner, Londyn Garner and Jase Moore; and multitude of nieces and nephews.
A celebration of life will be conducted 12:30 Saturday, December 2, 2017 at Bethel Church of The Nazarene, 455 Broadmoor Dr. Nashville, Tennessee 37216 with Pastor Fred Huff officiating. Burial will follow in Woodlawn Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers friends are invited to contribute in his name to Nazarene Compassion Ministries, Alzheimer's Association or your local retired pastor.
Friends and family will gather to remember Rev. Parmer at visitation Friday, December 1, 2017 at Bethel Church of The Nazarene from 6:00 until 8:00.
