Nancy was born on a unusually warm day, March 24, 1948 in Spring Creek, TN. Her siblings have said they got to play outside that day without their shoes, on the day she came into this world. She was born to John and Lucille Dabbs and was the baby of 8 children.
Nancy married her first husband in 1965 and was blessed with her beautiful son, Gary Dale Horner. She married her husband, Gene Haywood, in 1985 and was blessed with her beautiful daughter, Jennifer Nicole Haywood-Overstreet. Tragically, Dale was killed in a car accident in 1986 just a few weeks before Jennifer was born. She gained a “bonus son” Gary Haywood and “bonus daughter” Patty Haywood-Lovell when she married Gene.
Nancy was a dedicated mother and Nanny to her grandchildren first and foremost. She loved to keep herself going by doing for others especially her grandchildren. She was always busy and never sat still. She knew the definition of a servant’s heart and lived that daily. She enjoyed sewing and quilting, even though it took her over 30 years to finish her largest project-her daughter’s hand stitched baby quilt. She also loved getting complex stains out of laundry, she truly could get almost anything clean.
Nancy was a committed member of Concord Missionary Baptist Church in White House, TN since 1990. She loved all of her church family deeply. Her favorite Bible verse was “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.” Phil 4:13 This was her saying through every cancer treatment, she never complained, she just kept going through faith. Her favorite memory was the day she was saved in 1980 at a small church in West TN at a revival.
Nancy is preceded in death by her parents, John and Lucille Dabbs; her brothers, John, Joe, and Bill Dabbs; her son, Dale Horner and her “bonus son,” Gary Haywood.
Nancy is survived by her husband of almost 36 years, Gene Haywood; her daughter, Jennifer (Raymond) Overstreet; 6 granddaughters, Hayley (Ryan) Horner-Maness, Lauren Overstreet, Ashley Overstreet, Abigail Overstreet, Lyla Beth Overstreet, Casey (Bubba) Smith and Rebecca Williams ; 3 grandsons, Bryan Haywood, Chris Horton, and Shane Lovell. 1 great-granddaughter Savannah Overstreet; 7 great grandsons; 1 brother Howard (Betsy) Dabbs; 3 sisters, Sally Pearcy, Mary Jones, and Bessie Duncan; 3 sister in laws, Hettie Dabbs, Sue Meeker, and Joyce Eidson; and numerous nieces and nephews. All of these people she loved hard and made sure they knew how much they meant to her.
Family and friends will gather to remember Mrs. Haywood at a visitation Thursday, July 15, 2021 from 4:00 until 8:00 and Friday, July 16, 2021 from 10:00 until 2:00 at Concord Missionary Baptist Church White House.
A Celebration of Life will be conducted 2:00 Friday, July 16, 2021 at Concord Missionary Baptist Church 604 Tyree Springs Road White House, Tennessee with Bro. Morris Watson officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Memorial Gardens, Goodlettsville.
Pallbearers are Raymond Overstreet, Bryan Haywood, Dell Barnes, Terry Pearcy, Ken Hodge, and Casey Barnes.
In lieu of flowers, because Nancy couldn’t see spending so much money on something that would die so quickly, please make a donation to American Cancer Society.
