

Dave was born on July 26, 1938, to William (Bill) Bohl Jr. and Dorthey (Dode) Portz. He grew up in Buchanan, Michigan, where he attended and graduated from Buchanan High School. From an early age, Dave showed a natural curiosity and aptitude for mechanics—an interest that would shape both his career and his passions throughout life.
He went on to attend Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, earning a degree in Automotive Engineering. Dave built a distinguished career in the automotive industry, working for Bendix Corporation, Chrysler Corporation, and Volkswagen of America as a Head Test Engineer . His work reflected both technical excellence and a deep love for engineering innovation.
On August 5, 1961, Dave married Maureen Noonan. Together they built a life grounded in family, faith, and shared values.
A lifelong automotive enthusiast, Dave was deeply involved in motorsports for decades. From the 1950s through the 1990s, he was an active member of the NHRA. Working on roadsters, dragsters, a BB alcohol Funny Car, even a fuel Funny Car. While he wasn’t behind the wheel, he was at the heart of the operation—designing, building blowers, and tuning engines for his own teams and for others. Racing was more than a hobby; it was a passion that brought him camaraderie, excitement, and lifelong friendships.
Dave was a devoted father to his two children, Randall Bohl and Danya Bohl-Hallsell (Brian Hallsell). He was an especially proud grandfather to Amelia Hallsell, born July 8, 2005, who brought him immense joy.
A man of deep faith and generosity, Dave was a member of the Knights of Columbus and a faithful parishioner at St. Thomas Aquinas in Avondale and Our Lady of the Assumption in Overgaard, Arizona. He believed strongly in giving back and was a generous supporter of charitable causes throughout his life.
Dave will be remembered for his quiet strength, sharp mind, generous spirit, and unwavering dedication to family, faith, and the pursuits he loved. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the work he was proud of, and the stories that will continue to be shared by those who loved him.
