Raymond George Schaefer Jr., 89, died on March 23, 2026. He was a hard-working, respected man whose life was defined by steady service, deep faith, and a love for the people and places that mattered most to him. Raymond lived in Goodyear, Arizona.
Born February 22, 1937, in St. Cloud, Minnesota, Raymond was the son of Raymond Schaefer Sr. and Gertrude Schaefer. He graduated from Tech High School, beginning a lifelong pattern of showing up, working hard, and doing what needed to be done.
Raymond built a distinguished career with the St. Cloud Police Department, where he served as a well-respected police officer, sergeant, and captain. His work reflected the kind of quiet strength that earns trust over time—consistent, dependable, and grounded in care for others.
On July 18, 1959, Raymond married Bonnie Oster at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in St. Cloud, Minnesota. Together they formed a family rooted in love and loyalty. Raymond was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, son, and friend, and he carried those roles with pride and devotion.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Raymond loved the outdoors and the simple joy of time spent in nature. His faith was also central to his life: he served as a Eucharistic Minister, was a Knights of Columbus member, and in 2015 he became a Franciscan —an uplifting testament to a life that continued to grow in purpose and spirit.
Raymond was preceded in death by his wife, Bonnie Schaefer; his father, Raymond Schaefer Sr.; and his mother, Gertrude Schaefer.
He is survived by his daughters, Deborah Pietrzak (Kevin) and Shannon Meyer (Paul); his son, Mark Schaefer; his sister, Karen Kmitch (Kenneth Paulson); his brother, Allan Schaefer (Deanne); his grandchildren, Michael Tomsche (Lindsay), Hunter Schaefer,Deacon Schaefer, Lukas Meyer, Ashley Meyer, Ava Meyer ; and his great-grandchildren, Vincent Tomsche and Raymond Tomsche.
The family extends their deepest thanks to Nurse Kathy, and to Hospice of the Valley for their exceptional care and support. The family has suggested that donations may be made to Hospice of the Valley
