Born on September 17, 1951 in Chicago, Illinois to the late Robert Walter Widlhom and Fay Elnora Lunsford. She was raised in Chicago and later Oakbrook, Illinois. Her parents worked for TWA airlines which allowed her the opportunity to travel, including circumnavigating the globe with her mother and brother. As a child she spent many hours horseback riding and playing her cello and piano. She loved music and instilled a life-long love of music in her children and grandchildren. She graduated with honors from Willowbrook High School in 1969. She then attended Miami University of Ohio.
Barbara joined the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints on January 1, 1971; a day that brought her much joy and changed her life. Shortly after joining the church she transferred to Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where she met her sweetheart John. They were sealed in the Salt Lake City, Utah Temple on January 26, 1972. Barbara spent most of her married years in Lombard, Illinois where she raised her six children. Barbara loved to serve at church, school and in the community. She was very involved with the American Diabetes Association, even creating a summer day camp for children with juvenile diabetes, which she ran for many years. Barbara’s greatest passion was her family, both past and present. She loved family history, doing research to find relatives and their stories, preserving those memories and teaching numerous friends how to research their own family history. Her children and grandchildren were the joy in her life. She fostered a close relationship with each of them, taking time to attend concerts, graduations, birthdays and make many cherished memories. She was a wonderful cook and her grandchildren loved cooking and baking with her. They often requested their favorites when they came to visit. She loved and supported her husband John and enjoyed traveling with him and serving together in various capacities.
