Barbara Nell Hooks

Barbara Nell Hooks, 87, of Greensboro, NC, went home to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on Sunday, November 19, 2023. She was born in Bonifay, Florida on July 14, 1936 to John Wesley Mills and Ethel Mae (Finley) Mills.

Barbara lived in many places during her childhood: North Carolina, Oregon, Idaho, Michigan, Arkansas, and Florida. She graduated from Edgewater High School in Orlando, FL in 1954. She married her late husband, Elbert (Pete) Avery Hooks Sr. on June 21, 1964.

Barbara’s love for the Lord was very evident in her life. She was a member of Faithway Baptist Church in Greensboro, NC where she lived for the past 10 years. Prior to moving to North Carolina, Barbara lived in Montverde, Florida, and was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Winter Garden for almost 40 years.

Over the course of her life, Barbara held a number of occupations, some of which included: sawmill worker in Idaho; purse maker in Ocala, FL; grocery store clerk in Ocoee, FL; city clerk in Ocoee, FL; bus driver, bookkeeper, and lunch lady for Calvary Baptist Church and Calvary Christian School in Winter Garden, FL; volunteer worker at libraries in FL and NC, and a grist mill in Greensboro, NC.

Barbara’s favorite thing to do was spend time with her family. She fiercely loved her kids and grandkids. She spent hours at school programs, ball games, recitals, concerts, and church activities supporting her children and grandchildren. She spent many hours at her sewing machine, making clothes for family and friends. She made each grandchild a special outfit and a cross-stitched baby blanket. She dedicated many years caring for her elderly mother. Barbara also enjoyed spending time doing things for elderly friends in her community and church.

She is preceded in death by her husband Elbert Avery Hooks Sr, her parents, John Wesley Mills and Ethel Mae (Finley) Mills and her grandson, Philip Michael Hooks.

She is survived by: her brother, Wayne Mills of Dickson, TN, sisters, Hazel Nebel of Post Falls, ID, and Jackie Lehman of Tallahassee, FL, her son, Bert (& Michelle) Hooks of Mount Dora, FL, and daughters Terri (& Mark) Bracewell of Greensboro, NC, and Kim (& Myron) Kaufman of Forsyth, MO, and her grandchildren, Abigail Bracewell, Jay (& Emily) Kaufman, John Bracewell, Katie Bracewell, Hannah Kaufman, and Michael Bracewell.

Her funeral will be held at Calvary Baptist Church in Winter Garden, FL on Saturday, November 25, 2023 at 10:30 am. Visitation will be held at 9:30 prior to the service. Burial will be at Woodlawn Memorial Park in Gotha, FL following the service.
