David was born in No. 79 Village, Berbice, Guyana on May 10, 1935, one of nine children to parents Joseph and Sanicharie. He went to school in Skeldon and began teaching at age 14. In 1956 David left for the United States where he earned a B.A. degree and was elected to Who’s Who in American Colleges and Universities. He later studied Public Health at Tulane University, then returned to Guyana to work with the Guyanese government and USAID to help eradicate filaria.
While in Guyana he was “captivated by the beautiful and enchanting Farida,” whom he married. After the birth of their son Allan, the young family emigrated to Canada where their daughter Saudia was born, and David earned his M.D. After his graduation from medical school, they moved to Michigan where David trained in Obstetrics and Gynecology and Chad was born. They relocated to Louisville, Kentucky where David spent decades practicing medicine and serving the community. He was a natural leader, known for his rare combination of warmth, likeability and intellect.
David and Farida eventually retired to sunny Florida where he taught medical courses and served as an elder in their church. David was an avid fisherman and fulfilled his lifelong dream of earning his pilot’s license. He loved playing cards with his family and was a devoted Louisville Cardinal basketball fan.
He is survived by his loving wife Farida; three devoted children – Allan, Saudia (Keith) and Chad (Holli); five beautiful grandchildren who knew him as Ajah – Kateri, Sophie, Alexander, Mirabai and Benjamin; and his brother Dr. Alvin Gajadhar (Doris). He also leaves many nieces and nephews, in-laws, and numerous relatives and close friends in the United States, Canada, Guyana, and Holland who mourn his passing. He will be greatly missed.
May God bless him and keep him.
