Norman C. Lewis was born in Manhattan, New York. After graduating from Port Charlotte High School in Port Charlotte, Florida, Norman showed his talents on the football field and in the classroom at the University of Central Florida in Orlando. He received his Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice in December 2004.
In January 2005, Norman applied for sponsorship to the Law Enforcement Academy and was hired as a Deputy Sheriff Recruit. On August 15, 2005, Norman Lewis took an oath as a Deputy Sheriff promising to protect and defend the citizens of Orange County as a member of the Orange County Sheriff’s Office. Norman was assigned to the Sector IV Uniform Patrol Division and quickly established himself as a hardworking, dedicated Deputy Sheriff. His supervisors recognized him as one of the most dependable and proactive members of his squad, especially when working traffic violations.
As he progressed in his career, Norman followed his passion for motorcycles and curtailing aggressive drivers and joined the agency’s Motor/DUI unit. It was there that his positive and professional attitude, coupled with his knowledge of traffic laws, really made an impact. He was consistently recognized as a top performer in the Motor Unit, receiving an award for the Most Traffic Stops and Most Speeding Citations. Additionally, he was recognized by citizens he pulled over for his great attitude and positive demeanor. Supervisors received several calls about “that deputy who is always smiling” commenting about how friendly Norman was during their encounter. One motorist wrote “I am now poorer in my wallet than when we met, I’m richer for the experience of someone who truly exemplifies a good cop.”
Not only did Norman have a smile for the citizens he served, but for all those that knew him. He was always willing to take a new deputy under his wing and share his knowledge. Norman’s devotion to his squad members, family, friends and the citizens of Orange County was a shining example that all should aspire to.
Norman is survived by his parents, Norma and John Lewis, his law enforcement family, and the many, many friends whose lives he touched. He is preceded in death by his brother, Darryl Smiley and sister, Cecilia Jean Lewis.
