Edna Campbell accomplished many things in her life and if you ask those who knew her well, what they would remember her by, it would probably be her baking. Mrs. Eddie made a “mean Christmas rum cake” so much so that friends and family couldn’t wait for Christmas time so they could receive their special deliveries. As her daughters, she always knew we would come back for seconds and before we could get the words out to ask for more than one cake, she would say, “Unuh make it last!” She was also known for never forgetting birthdays, holidays and when shopping she would thoughtfully bring fresh fruits and vegetables to her children and family/friends.
Edna’s life began in Trelawny, Jamaica on September 22, 1932. She was born to Beatrice Labourer and had three sisters- Iris (predeceased), Gwen (predeceased) and Sylvia. She attended Elementary school and went on to start High School. And it was during her high school years, when her parents informed her, they could no longer financially support her education. It was a pivotal moment that shifted the trajectory of her life.
In 1963, she migrated to the United States, completing a business course, her high school equivalency and obtained her EKG certification. She went on to further her education at Brooklyn College becoming a medical transcriber. During her 9 years working at Brookdale Hospital Medical Center, she rediscovered her desire to work in the medical field to support patient care.
In her words as she applied for her nursing program she wrote, “I would like to be Nurse because I will be able to provide care, compassion, strength and encouragement to the young and elderly alike. I would like to develop a professional capability in the field of nursing so that I will be able to relate to patients and their families.”
In July 1968, she married the love of her life Fisley Campell, her forever boyfriend, as she would call him. Together they went on to expand their family giving birth to Michele DeCaul and Deborah Bien-Aime. In 1979, they gained their United States citizenship, and life became a whirlwind of more schooling, certifications, new jobs and establishing their roots in Brooklyn, New York. She accomplished her dream of becoming a nurse.
In the mid-1980’s they decided to take a leap and move to Palm Bay, Florida to give their daughters a better life. If she wasn’t baking, she was sewing or shopping. She was a fashionista at heart, loved being cute and finding great deals. The one thing she valued above all else was her relationship with God—reading and studying His Word was her passion. She made sure our family attended church, her daughters were involved in Sunday school and church programs. She encouraged us to recite scriptures, share Bible stories, and pray together.
Enda leaves behind her husband- Fisley Campbell, her sister Slyvia, her daughters and son in laws – Michele & Bryan DeCaul, Deborah and Jude Bien-Aime and her grandchildren – Carrington, Kayla and Jaiden and a host of other family members and friends.
