Herbert Ernest Mimler, Jr., aged 74, passed away peacefully at home on August 10, 2025, surrounded by his loving family. He was a beloved husband, father, PopPop, brother, and friend, as well as mentor to many. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Herb was born on September 20, 1950 in Somers Point, NJ. Upon graduating from Mainland Regional High School in 1968, Herb continued his education at Cape May County Vo-Tech School. He joined the 177th Fighter Wing, Civil Engineer Squadron in April of 1971, while working for the City of Linwood as a trash collector. He then worked for his brother-in-law, Todd Sauer, at Sauer Construction and for the State of New Jersey at the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, retiring from the State in 2000. Herb continued his military career with the New Jersey Air National Guard until 2007, retiring from the United States Air Force as the 177th Fighter Wing Command Chief with 36 years of dedicated service.
Aside from his life accomplishments, Herb had many hobbies he loved outside of work. He was a member of the Linwood Volunteer Fire Company, the Germania Volunteer Fire Company, Smokey Hunt Club, G&G Hunt Club, as well as a life member of both the Pine Valley Rod & Gun Club and the American Legion. He thoroughly enjoyed riding his Harley, hunting, fishing, boating and really anything outdoors. One of his favorite pastimes was just sitting by the pool listening to music and the frogs. Herb and Gail spent a lot of their time together traveling the world and taking cruises. He especially loved his time with his family, having a beer with friends and “solving world problems.”
Herb is preceded by his father Herbert E. Mimler, Sr., mother Dorothy Stetser and sister Barbara Mawhinney. He is survived by his devoted wife, Gail Mimler; his children, Herb (Sharon) and Mike (Kathy); grandchildren, Roman, Sean, Lillian and Lindsay; and sister Joyce Disciascio (Pete); as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins. His memory will be cherished by all.
There will be a full service with military honors on Tuesday, September 2nd at 2:00pm at the Estell Manor Park in Estell Manor, NJ, with reception immediately to follow at the Pine Valley Rod & Gun Club in Egg Harbor City, NJ. There will also be a Celebration of Life on Sunday, August 24th from 2-6pm at the Woodlawn Memorial Park Funeral Home in Gotha, FL for local friends, family and loved ones. All are welcome to attend either service.
The family would like to thank the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for their assistance and dedicated care over the years. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate donations being sent to specific charities that were special to Herb:
The ALS Foundation www.als.org
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs www.CDCeportal.VA.gov, through the James A Haley Veteran’s Hospital in Florida, specifically benefiting either the Fisher House Program or the Spinal Cord Injury Service Program.
