Joan was born December 7, 1932 in Toronto, Canada to the late Cornelius (Paddy) and Rose Kidd. She was the older of 2 children of which her younger brother died at very young age. Joan was educated in the Collegiate Institute and Business School in Toronto, Canada.
Joan met a young boy at the young age of 16 while canoeing on her family lake. Little did she know there was a young man from Ohio fishing with his friends that fell out of his canoe and climbed into in her canoe, this would set the course of her life. They exchanged letters for two years before marrying in 1951 in Toronto. Joan and Bill were married 40 years.
Joan moved to Ohio in 1951 and began her career working as the Chief Operator for Ohio Bell Telephone Company working her way up to Traffic Administrator in 1956 until 1959 when she and her husband moved to Melbourne, Florida. Joan transferred to working with Southern Bell Telephone as the PBX instructor, Chief Service Advisor and Traffic Engineer. Joan earned numerous awards throughout her career as Service Advisor of the Year in 1973. She has been in many articles and also mentioned by Miss Mona Ling in her book “ How to Increase Sales and Put Yourself Across by Telephone”. Joan retired from Southern Bell in 1983 within 6 months of her husband retiring. Joan continued to serve as Life Member Representative in the Pioneers BellSouth Volunteers heading up many functions and parties for the Retirees of Southern Bell.
After the sudden death of her husband in 1997 Joan moved to Daytona Beach Shores. She just could not stop working being on the Condo Association Board as President with in-between working with the Pioneers she always kept busy! Joan loved to travel and she did just that with over 30 cruises to the all of Caribbean Islands, California, Canada, Alaska, Australia, New Zealand, Spain, Greek Islands, Azores, Honduras to South America and many more trips in between.
Joan was a take charge woman and was very good at everything she put her hands and mind on. Joan loved her family and friends and had the biggest heart for those she loved. Joan was all of 5’2” and full of energy and could take on the biggest of battles all with a smile on her face. She would always say, “Live each day to the fullest as you are never promised another.” Joan was one heck of a woman !!!
