Joy Ann Slate (nee Feaser), 76, of Winter Park Florida went to be with the Lord on the 14th of January 2018. In her typically feisty fashion, Joy fought a courageous 4 year and 7month battle with cancer in spite of a much shorter prognosis.
Joy was born in Clarksburg, West Virginia on December 19th, 1941. The family later relocated to Angola Indiana where Joy worked at her parent's business "The Dixie Diner." Later marrying, her life as a military spouse was filled with many relocations and travels across the US as well as Europe. In 1978 the family settled in Winter Park Pines, Winter Park Florida where she remained until her death. Joy was a Nurse by trade; still maintaining an active license. She earned her RN from Memorial Hospital in South Bend Indiana, a Bachelors in Industrial Nursing from St Josephs in Maine, a Bachelors in Nursing from Florida Southern College, as well as a Masters in Adult Health Education from Nova University. With most of her career being focused on Geriatric Care, she always retained a love for Floor Nursing and Nursing Education. Joy was a loved and respected teacher at Orlando Technical as well as numerous other colleges. Joy was the type of person that "never met a stranger." She had a knack for being able to connect to people with her witty humor and caring nature. Joy never saw herself as being above anyone else, instead she always sought out ways to enrich the lives of others. Joy was kind but bold in her relationships and you always knew where she stood on an issue. She taught her boys to be strong and respectful men with a focus on integrity. Joy had a love for animals rescuing several as pets and was a regular contributor to the HSUSA and local Rescues. Joy served her community as a member of the Women of the Moose and the Eastern Star.
Joy was preceded in death by her parents Eugene and Gladys Feaser. She is survived by: son Daniel and his wife Lesley of North Carolina, son Garrick and his wife Angela of Maine, eldest granddaughter Sara Snyder and her husband Matt of North Carolina and granddaughter Lexi Slate of North Carolina.
Joy is also survived by members of her "adopted family", Edward T Ryan of Winter Park Florida, his daughter and grandson Kelly and Alex Berryman of Kentucky, her "3rd son" Rene Carder, his wife Yvonne and their sons RJ and Nick of Apopka, FL. In addition, Joy always held in special memory her "adopted 4th son", the late Michael Paul.
A Memorial and Entombment service will be held at Woodlawn Memorial Park, 400 Woodlawn Cemetary Rd, Gotha Florida 34734 on Friday, January 19, 2018 at 3pm. The Service will be officiated by close friend and advisor, Mae Bartles.
