Mabel Cain Sturges, 106, passed away on Nov. 27, at her residence in Orlando. She was born on March 9, 1911, in LaFollette, the only child of Sherman Cain and Lennie Lynch Cain. In her death, the community suffers a distinct loss in that over such a long life her influence extended far beyond the boundaries of her family and her church.
Mrs. Sturges came to Orlando as a young lady and graduated from Orlando High School. For several years she worked in the accounting office of the Yowell-Drew Department Store on Orange Avenue. She married George Stilson Sturges and lived for many years on Cherokee Drive. Mrs. Sturges was predeceased by her husband, George, and within the past year their daughter, Barbara Sturges Keene and son-in-law, Larry Keene.
Mrs. Sturges was a member of the Cathedral Church of St. Luke for over ninety years and was a founding member of St. Elizabeth Guild, a women’s service organization dedicated to supporting community charities and various Parrish missions. To raise money, the Guild holds several fund raisers a year selling household items and baked goods. A number of years ago, the organization named these events, “Mabel’s Table.” She was also active in the Altar Guild.
Shortly after her marriage she became a primary care giver to her husband’s extended family and was absolute in her love and loyalty to them. In time she became known as an exemplary hostess and as one who was tireless in her support of her church and the Orlando community. Mrs. Sturges was a dedicated member of SOROSIS Federated Women’s Club for over fifty years.
While it might be said that she died with no surviving relatives, that would not be quite correct, for in her life she took every friend in as family. There was no difference. Her memorial service will be held at the Cathedral Church of Saint Luke at 11 a.m., 130 North Magnolia Avenue on Friday, Dec. 15. In lieu of flowers please make a memorial donation in Mrs. Sturges' name to The Cathedral Church of St. Luke, St. Elizabeth Guild (make check payable to The Cathedral Church of St Luke with a note in the memo line), or a charity of your choice.
Arrangements made under Woodlawn Memorial Park and Funeral Home.
