was born on April 7, 1916 in Christ Church, Barbados to Sinclair Carter. She was the oldest of six
children: Kenneth Carter, Orbelle Carter, Violet Mascoll, Thelbert Mascoll and Keith Mascoll. Muriel
immigrated to the United States in 1928 and began working as a nanny until she got a job as a seamstress
in the garment district in Manhattan and later in Nassau County, Long Island.
Muriel accepted the Lord Jesus Christ at an early age. While living in Brooklyn, New York, she attended
Mount Zion Church. She was united in holy matrimony to McIvaine Harris of Cambridge Massachusetts
in 1950. This union was blessed with a son, David Harris. Muriel then attended Gospel Hall Brethren. She
maintained her fellowship at Brethren until she moved to Long Island and continued to worship the Lord
at St. Albans, which is affiliated with Brethren. She and McIvaine retired to Tampa, Florida in 1993, and
later moved to Winter Garden, where they attended Hiawassee Bible Chapel.
Muriel enjoyed singing and playing the tambourine along with gardening and sewing clothes for herself
and her friends. She faithfully read her bible everyday and marked up verses that were particularly
meaningful to her life. She regularly attended Sunday morning and evening church services, and Sisters'
Bible Study meetings. Muriel resided in Florida until her husband McIvaine's passing in 2007. She then
moved back to New York in 2008 and resided with her son and daughter-in law, and attended church at
St. Albans again.
Muriel leaves to cherish her memory, her son David Harris and daughter-in-law, Linda Anderson Harris;
sister Violet Harewood; grandchildren Nyemadeh and Dweh Harris; nieces Marjorie Green, Pearlyta Price
Khan and Letia Udensi; nephews Neal Mascoll, Eugene Price, Stephen Anderson, and Phillip and
Michael Udensi; cousin Devere Wilson; and a host of grand nieces and nephews, cousins and other loving
relatives and friends.
