Pat was born on January 9, 1931, to loving parents, Richard Francis and Alice Marion Crawley in Carthage, NY. They were teachers of Physical Education and English.
Pat graduated from Oyster Bay HS in 1948 where she was active in intramural sports. In 1952 she earned her BS from Adelphi College in Garden City, New York, where she was a member of Delta Gamma. She first taught home economics in Southampton, New York. Next, seeking travel opportunities, she worked for American Airlines. Her real passion, however, was fashion, which led her to Lord & Taylor and then to a career with Vogue where she was an educational representative for the Vogue Pattern Service. In the April 1957 edition of “Practical” Pat was featured. “She has the kind of job that most girls would adore. She is surrounded by the most up-to-date and prettiest clothes imaginable. …she puts on fashion shows for teen-agers in high schools all over the USA.”
In 1961 she met and married the love of her life, Richard N. Bain. He was a musician in the U.S. Navy Band. She was a first-row attendee at his many concerts across the country. They lived in Arlington, Virginia in the 1960s then in Orlando in the early 70s while Dick was an event planner for Walt Disney World.
They returned to the Washington DC area in the mid-decade where Dick organized the US Armed Forces Bicentennial Band. Pat continued her studies at Virginia Tech in teaching and fashion design. She received her Virginia Teachers Certificate in 1980 and taught in the Arlington Schools while also designing clothes and accessories for Frankie Welch of Virginia. In this period, Dick was working for the Veterans’ Administration.
When they retired, they bought the first house of their lives in Orlando near Arnold Palmer’s Bay Hill Club. They dined there most nights, and the club became their focus with a wonderful community of friends and a pool where Pat swam regularly. Their 50th Anniversary party in 2011 was at the club with Arnold Palmer, among other friends joining in the celebration.
Pat & Dick graciously entertained many family members and friends. They took wide-eyed nieces and nephews on tours of Washington and then Walt Disney World. During retirement, guests would enjoy elegant dinners at the Bay Hill Club. After Dick’s death in 2015, Pat eventually moved to the Encore assisted living home, Pat wanting to live in her “beautiful Florida”.
Pat leaves behind her stepson Michael Bain, his wife Nancy, and his children Shannon, Ian, and Brent and his wife Theresa. Pat is survived by her sisters Barbara Micari, Jean Kraemer, her sister-in-law Tami Crawley, brother Paul Crawley (Millie) and cousin Joseph Crawley (Gay), as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Richard, parents, brother Richard Crawley and brothers-in-law Frank Micari and Edward Kraemer.
Interment will be at Arlington National Cemetery. Her husband CPO USN Richard N Bain is buried there.
