Bob was born in St. Louis, Missouri on February 10, 1938. He was a proud graduate of St. Louis University, where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree and played varsity baseball. He later attended the University of Oklahoma, where he received a Master of Arts degree in Latin American History.
A distinguished and highly respected Full-Bird Colonel in the United States Air Force, Bob served for 23 years. He was an expert navigator flying KC-135 airplanes. It wasn’t a common path for navigators to achieve high office. Bob had a sharp intellect, and a keen eye for how to approach complicated tasks, solving problems before they occurred. He spoke less, so what he said mattered. He often recalled with amazement and pride being chosen time and again for special training and advancement. After his years flying around the world, he transitioned to intelligence, where he worked for the Central Intelligence Agency, once briefing George HW Bush, and served as Commander of the Intelligence Analysis Squadron. His military career earned him numerous honors and awards, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Air Force Commendation Medal, and the Air Force Outstanding Unit Award.
After retiring from the Air Force, Bob built a career as a realtor in Central Florida, where he earned a reputation as an expert in the field. As always, his quiet competence made him someone his clients trusted and returned to. He was also an active member of the Air Force Association and a proud alumnus of both St. Louis University High School and St. Louis University College.
Baseball, especially his beloved St. Louis Cardinals, was one of Bob's greatest passions. He was a third baseman in college, and even in his later days could catch a ball seemingly without looking. Bob also found great steadiness and comfort in the Catholic Church. He used his experience and Catholic education to help run services in the many places he was stationed and could frequently be found at Sunday services at Holy Family.
However, it was his love for his family—particularly his daughters and grandchildren—that defined his life. He thought about them constantly, nurtured their hopes and dreams and treasured his time with each of them. Bob had a deeply moving tenderness with babies and young children that made them feel loved and safe. It not only drew his own grandchildren toward him, but it made him an important part of his friend Janet’s grandchildren’s lives as well. His unwavering care and deep concern for others will forever leave a legacy of love, kindness, and devotion.
Bob was preceded in death by his parents, John and Clara Anselmo, and his brother, John Anselmo. He is survived by his beloved companion, Janet Wiedman; his devoted daughters, Doria Anselmo and Dana (Adrian) Pencak; his cherished grandchildren, Mia Pencak, Maxim Pencak, Alexander Pencak and Jake Marusak; and his former wife and mother of his children, Deborah Holcombe Agoos.
A Mass will be held on Saturday, May 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Holy Family Catholic Church, 5125 S. Apopka Vineland Road in Orlando, Florida, 32819. A private internment for family only will follow.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert Anselmo’s name to the Wounded Warrior Project.
