Roberta Louise Robey Vaught was born on August 11, 1932 in Des Moines, Iowa, the third of six children to Jeannette and Floyd Robey. While living in California she met Richard Vaught and married on March 30th, 1951. They raised their two children, Debra Alstott and Steven Vaught, in Florida and retired to the mountains of Shawsville, Virginia to be near Richard’s family. After 61 years of marriage, Richard passed on December 17, 2012.
She helped support her family with a twenty-year sales career at Remnant Shop, Belk’s (fabric department), Mae’s Fabrics, and Burdine’s. She was an avid bowler, who played on three leagues in Orlando at the Colonial Bowling Lanes in the 1960’s: WIMIX, Koffee Klub, and the Colonial Playgirls. She retired to Virginia and started her brand Crafted by Roberta, which demonstrated her talents in hand-sewing award-winning quilts, weaving baskets, crocheting, knitting sweaters, and sewing clothes. Canning from their garden was a part of every summer, and she loved sharing her home-canned goods with her family and friends. After a long day of working in the garden, she enjoyed a half of a cold beer in the evening. She and Richard were very involved with the Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) through their church, collecting and bagging food for neighbors in need.
Roberta was an independent and very talented woman who loved her children and grandchildren. She is survived by her sister, Susan Faerber of Utah, her children, Debra Alstott, Steven and daughter-in-law Diane Vaught of Orlando, seven grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren. You may send flowers or make a donation to Vitas Innovative Hospice Care, 2201 Lucien Way Suite 100, Maitland FL 32751, or a charity of your choice. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, July 10th, 2018 from 10:00-11:00 am with a funeral service to follow at 11:00 am at Woodlawn Funeral Home, 400 Woodlawn Cemetery Road, Gotha, FL 34734.
