It is with extreme sadness that we announce the passing of Roy Yim Tak Yu, age 95, a loving husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Roy passed away peacefully on Friday, May 10, 2024, at his home in Windermere, FL with his family by his side. Roy was born on September 4, 1928, in Hong Kong to a prominent Yu family from Toishan China. He attended Wah Yan College, Hong Kong, during the war-torn years of WWII. His love of learning, acuity for engineering, and adaptability to changes allowed him to pursue new personal interests and careers as he navigated through life. Throughout his life, he took on various career paths and worked in his family shipping business, served for the Hong Kong Auxiliary Police Force (HKAPF), used his business acumen as a car salesman, and skilled chef of Chinese cuisine. In his search of a better life and brighter future for his family, Roy came to the Boston, MA area by himself in the mid-1960’s and moved to the Florida Space Coast during the booming era of the Apollo Space Program where he became the head chef at the Hong Kong House Restaurant in Cocoa Beach FL and labored tirelessly to provide for his family. He brought his family to the United States in 1976 and eventually settled in Cape Canaveral, FL while continuing his career as head chef for many restaurants in the area. Roy retired in the early 90’s and enjoyed spending time with family and friends.
Roy was heartbroken when his loving wife Lena Yu of 65 years passed away a few months ago on September 6, 2023. He is survived by Cynthia (daughter) of Windermere, FL; Anthony and Cecilia (son and daughter-in-law) of Spencerville, MD; Henry and Christi (son and daughter-in-law), Stephen and Erin (grandson and granddaughter-in-law) and Aspyn (great-granddaughter), Brent (grandson) of Titusville, FL; Richard and Rita (son and daughter-in-law), Madeleine (granddaughter) and Aaron (grandson) of San Francisco, CA, and his extended family in Hong Kong.
Roy was a gentle, caring, quick-witted, cat-loving and well-read person who took care of his family and loved and respected by all. He loved history, Chinese classic literatures, photography, and soccer and even played in the HKAPF soccer team while he served on the police force for a few years. He left behind moments in life cherished by all family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at Woodlawn Funeral Home & Memorial Park, Gotha, FL on 25 May 2024 at 11 AM. In lieu of flowers, the Yu family requests donations in Roy’s honor to the Alley Cats Allies or Arbor Day Foundation at the links below.
