Sylvia Agnes Murphy was born in Kingston, Jamaica on January 8, 1927 to Lucretia Coombs and Adolph Murphy. She received her education in Kingston and Breadnut Hill, St. Ann. Sylvia attended the Kingston Technical High School, and Durham School of Commerce in Kingston where she studied shorthand and typing.
Sylvia developed a love for photography and worked for many years at Frasers Photo Studio, Duke Street, Kingston. Many of the family members had their very first picture taken by her.
On August 12, 1957 she married Winston Henry, who died tragically after a short union.
In 1967, she migrated to the United States and resided in The Bronx, New York for many years. Her last residence before leaving New York was Co-Op City. Sylvia joined Citi Bank in February 1969. She retired in 1990 after twenty one years. Sylvia moved to Orlando, Florida in 1993. Aunt Syl, or Aunt Sylvia, as she was fondly called, learned to drive in Orlando at age 66. She loved driving her red Honda Accord, and relished in the freedom and independence it afforded her.
On March 8, 2014, at the age of 87, after bravely battling her illness, Sylvia departed this life. As her health declined, she was attended by her friend of many years Mrs. Mabel Kane-Benjamin and her nephew Irvin “Bill” Neath.
Sylvia was the youngest of all her siblings. She is survived by sisters Mrs. Lynneth Warlock and Ms. Ina Aikens, several cousins, nieces, nephews and other relatives and friends.
