Jack Dwayne Carlson, age 88 of Grand Blanc, passed away Thursday, November 23, 2017. He was born on June 12, 1929 in Flint to parents Severin and Ethel (McDowell) Carlson. Jack graduated from Flint Northern High School in 1947. He later graduated from General Motors Institute in 1951 and eventually retired from General Motors in 1984 after 30 years of service. On March 14, 1955, Jack married the love of his life, Joyce Gillett in Angola, Indiana and together they had four children. In his earlier days Jack was a stock broker and he continued passing along his knowledge of stocks throughout his life. He coached and sponsored little league baseball for several years. Jack was a member of First Congregational Church of Grand Blanc, the Flint Elks Club, and the Power Squadron. He started to build a 22 foot Cabin Cruiser in his garage until it grew so large he had to finish it in the driveway, and later ended up trading it for a 1927 40 foot Matthews motorsailer named “The Joy” which was lovingly referred to as “that damn boat”. Jack also loved cross country skiing - something he did up until he was 83 years old, and travelling, especially by train. Jack is survived by his loving wife of 62 years, Joyce Carlson; children: Ethel (Jim) Bence, Peggy (Bill) Wray, Susan (Luke) Saylor, and John (Renee) Carlson; grandchildren: Aaron Bence, Christopher Bence, Bradley (Shalee) Wray, Scott (Lindsey) Wray, Daniel (Alissa) Saylor, Laura (Ryan) Brown, Jonathan Carlson, and Jacob Carlson; two great granddaughters: Moira Wray and Emelia Saylor.
