Mary Beth (Thomas) Atkinson was born in Flint, Michigan on August 21, 1949, the first daughter and second child of Gerald Bernard and Victoria Joy (Peterson) Thomas. Mary Beth graduated from the Flint College of the University of Michigan with a teaching degree and a major in history. She was employed by the Michigan Department of Health and Human Services for 36 years, working in Child Foster Care, Adult Services, and Child Support Services. She was an extraordinary and loving wife, mother, and grandmother, and fortunate indeed was anyone lucky enough to be one of her many friends. For many years until her death, she attended classes in fine arts at Mott Community College and the Flint Institute of Arts, and she particularly enjoyed working in ceramics. She also enjoyed knitting, needle point, and quilt making. She is survived by her husband of 46 years, John Atkinson of Flushing, Michigan; her daughter, Sarah (Eric) Stoll of Kalamazoo, Michigan and son Stephen Atkinson of Owosso, Michigan; her brother Doctor Gerald (Carol) Thomas of Saginaw, Michigan, her brother Attorney Michael (Virginia) Thomas of Columbus, Ohio, and sister Jeanne (Bruce) deGraaf of Shrewsbury, Massachusetts; and, by numerous aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews, and friends. She would wish that any donations in her honor be made to the Humane Society of Genesee County. A memorial to honor her life will be held on Sunday, September 30, 2018 at 2:00pm at the Brown Funeral Home, 1480 E. Hill Rd., Grand Blanc.
