Pastor Hill passed away surrounded by his loving family on Wednesday, February 19th. He was 70.
Born in Pontiac on October 18, 1954, to the late Rollin and Marion (née Wells) Hill, Pastor Hill grew up in southeast Michigan with his five siblings: Marilyn, David, Joy, Brian, and Jeremy. He graduated from Holly High School before accepting God's call to ministry and attended Concordia Lutheran Seminary in St. Louis, Missouri.
While in seminary, on December 18, 1976, he married Cora (née Smith) Hill, who was attending a nearby nursing school. The couple lived in St. Louis, Missouri, and Moline, Illinois, before graduating and accepting their first call in Kansas. They had two daughters, Sarah and Mary.
Pastor Hill spent the rest of his life in ministry, serving in various roles but always remaining anchored in pastoral duties at congregations in Indiana, Michigan, and Ohio. He was particularly passionate about his ministries to the deaf community and was a strong advocate for mental health.
No matter where he served, he remained a loyal fan of Detroit sports teams, particularly the Red Wings, Tigers, and Lions. He was a devoted husband, a dedicated father, and a doting grandfather to his grandsons Eli, Sam, Ethan, and Jonah. One of Pastor Hill's favorite pastimes was spending time with his grandchildren, hosting movie nights, and attending their band, orchestra, hockey, and other sporting events. He also enjoyed traveling, antiquing, and attending plays and symphonies with his wife. He was an avid reader and an amateur radio enthusiast.
He leaves behind a legacy of unwavering faith, boundless compassion, and a heart that never ceased to serve. The love he poured into this world will endure in the lives he changed, the faith he strengthened, and the family he cherished—including many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Well done, good and faithful servant.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to any of the four of Pastor Hill's grandson Eli's classmates who were killed in the mass shooting at Oxford High School: Madisyn Baldwin, Tate Myre, Justin Shilling and Hana St. Juliana:
