Susan Jean Gokey

GOKEY, Susan Jean – age 69 passed away peacefully on Monday, July 27, 2015 at her home. Per her wishes cremation has taken place and private services have been held. Susan was born on April 15, 1946 in Rochester, NY to the late Elmer and Sylvia (Dean) Carroll. She graduated from Bowling Green State University with her Bachelor Degree in Social Work. She married Michael Gokey on May 21, 1981 in Burton, MI. Susan worked for many years as a social worker for the State of Michigan. She most recently had worked for Genesys Convalescent Center as their social worker before retiring. Susan had a great love for animals, especially her cats and bird watching. She enjoyed collecting Fenton art glass and clocks that dated back all the way to the 1800’s. Her grandchildren were her pride and joy. Susan was a strong and courageous person. She was always concerned about others and was completely selfless. Her positive attitude and genuine heart will be missed by all who knew her. Surviving are her husband of 34 years, Michael Gokey; daughter, Sara Shirey; grandchildren, Quinn, Hailie, Emalie, Mattison, Maitland, and Kevin; very special niece, Amy Carroll and her son Nathaniel DiCarlo; nephew, Daniel Hayden; sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Pat and Herb VanDyke; her life-long friends, Toni Bogden and Becky Margrif; and many other special people. She was preceded in death by her parents; son, Matthew Eberly; sister, Judith Hayden; and brother-in-law, David Hayden.
