Charles (Charlie or Chuck) Evert Reiber died August 21, 2025 in the arms of his beloved wife Diana, at home in Grand Junction, CO after a courageous 7 month battle with esophageal cancer. Charles was born November 5, 1949 in Pittsburgh, PA to Paul and Esta Reiber. He was the third of five children. In his earlier days the family moved to Hudson, OH and later to Westport CT. Charlie was an avid wrestler and football player in school and loved sports his entire life. In his early teens, he came out to Colorado for three summers attending Sweetwater Boys Youth Camp. There, he learned to run livestock, put up hay, and basic ranching duties. He was hired as a camp hand the last two summers. It was there, he discovered his love for the West. His family moved to England his junior-senior year of high school. There, he joined a rugby club and played for the town of Harpenden, quickly moving up from the 7th to 2nd side, and became a star player. After high school, he moved from England to Colorado and attended Western State College (now Western Colorado University) in Gunnison, CO. After college, he worked 17 years, in the mid 70’s - early 90’s, in the oil shale business for Occidental Petroleum and Union Oil, obtaining several safety certifications, EMT license, and shift supervisor positions while obtaining his real estate brokers license. During the mid 70’s and 80’s, Charlie married Diane Brewer. They had 3 children, Nathan, Hollie, and Chad. Diane passed away in 1985. He later married Jane Dyer who previously had a daughter, Irish, who Charlie adored. They had 2 children, Ashley and Chip. After oil shale, he purchased the Loma Country Store. This was no doubt his favorite “job” and he quickly became a huge part of the Loma community. The stories go on and on and on. Charlie was a music buff in many genres from classical to particularly the 60’s. He was a history buff, an avid reader, and loved Jepardy. Charlie played on local mens’ soccer teams and coached girls soccer (with daughter Ashley) for 9 years. He spent hours with Chip skateboarding, and Chad throwing the baseball back and forth. After selling the LC Store, he continued selling real estate. In 2004, Charlie married the true love of his life, Diana Davis (Gardner). They spent nearly 22 years together, side by side, whether working, at their cabins, traveling to England (where aged rugby players remembered him), Phoenix, cruised Alaska, reunions at the OuterBanks, NC, Amtrack train trip, visiting family in CA, CT, PA, VT, and our final place in Ouray. Diana witnessed daily, his humble generocity, kindness, and selflessness, always caring more about others. You would never know how smart he was. Charlie, you will be remembered for your humble kindness, and missed a great deal. Charles was predeceased by his father and mother. He is survived by his wife Diana, children Nathan (Deb) Reiber, Hollie Reiber, Chad (Vivian) Reiber, Ashley (David) Van der Vieren, Chip (Liza) Reiber, Irish (Toby) Turnage, 13 grandchildren. Siblings Judy Reiber, Paul Reiber, Tom Reiber and Robert Reiber. Also Lukie, our 4-legged feline and many nieces and nephews.
Charles' services will be Wednesday, September 3, 2025, at 11:00 AM, at Callahan Edfast Mortuary, 2515 Patterson Rd, Grand Junction, CO 81505. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to local CLAWS or Hope West Hospice .
