Charlotte Louise (Casbon) Gregory passed peacefully from this life, surrounded by beloved family members and friends, on January 29, 2019 after a brief illness. She was born on March 7, 1928 in Valparaiso, Indiana to Floyd S. and Ethel (Dowdell) Casbon. Charlotte was a tomboy growing up, and a lifelong sports lover. She loved cheerleading in high school, and was the head cheerleader at Valparaiso University her freshman year. At eighteen, she met the love of her life, Robert Gregory, and they were married from 1947 until his passing in 2006.
Charlotte and Bob were adventurers, and moved early in their marriage to Colorado, where he taught school, and they raised their two sons, Kelly and Dana. After living in several communities on the Western Slope, the family moved to Gunnison, where she completed her teaching degree and Bob completed a Master’s. After Gunnison, Charlotte and Bob moved to Alaska to teach, then to the Glenwood Springs area, completing their careers there. They moved to Grand Junction after retiring.
Never one to sit still, Charlotte taught her sons to work hard, to be fair-minded, and encouraged them in sports. In her professional career, Charlotte taught biology and physical education, and coached women’s track and field. She was adamant about girls’ sports being of equal importance to boys’ sports, and, when necessary, stood up to other staff on behalf of her athletes. Robert was her best cheerleader and coaching assistant.
Charlotte was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, her parents, sister Jean Gaines, brothers Dennis and Jerry Casbon. Left to mourn her loss are her sister, Marge (Verlon) Birky of Valparaiso, IN; brother, Bud (Jill) Casbon of Horseshoe Bend, AR; sons, Kelly (Pam) of Grand Junction, and Dana (Darlene) of Craig; grandchildren Kerrie (Jake) Tyndall, Cully Gregory, Erica Gregory (Leland Markley), Brian Gregory (Tina Urrea), six great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.
Charlotte had a vibrant spirit which she passed to her family, whom she loved above all else. The family wishes to thank Dr. Marshall Steel, St. Mary’s Medical Center staff and the staff of HopeWest Hospice Care Center for making her last days peaceful, and requests that donations in her memory be given to St. Mary’s Medical Center or HopeWest Hospice Care Center. An inurnment service is planned for February 13 at 1:00 P.M. at Veterans’ Memorial Cemetery for family and friends.
Her children rise up and call her happy; her husband too, and he praises her:
“Many women have done excellently, but you surpass them all.”
- Proverbs 31:28-29
