I knew Etta Hill and she was a great person and a great boss! My name is Rickey Gonzales and I used to work for Etta at the restaurant on I-70 and I called her a true friend. I didn't know that she passed, and I don't speak to anyone about her, I wish I knew I could of been there for her service to say goodbye! But I will always remember how fun it was too work for her and I will miss her so very much! Etta I will miss you terribly and you are sitting by the hand of God! Rest In Peace my friend!

Etta Jane Torbert Hill, 82, of Palisade, Colo., passed away Sunday, March 6, 2016 in Grand Junction, Colorado. Etta Jane was born May 9, 1933 in Clinton, Illinois; she was the oldest daughter of Dude and Dixie Torbert. She graduated from Clinton Community High School in Clinton, Illinois in 1951 and attended Illinois State University in Normal, Illinois. Etta moved to Fresno, California in 1959, where she met and married her husband, John David Hill. John and Etta first made their home in Tranquility, California; but in 1967, they moved their family to Colorado.  They initially settled in Kremmling, followed by a move to New Castle.   In 1971, the family moved to DeBeque, Colorado.  Etta enjoyed a ranch life – tending to her husband, three children, and numerous ranch hands. During this time, Etta also worked at the local post office where she loved to banter with the townspeople. Etta was also active in the local Eastern Star Chapter. 
Etta loved to share her flair for baking and cake decorating with her family and friends. She baked holiday and birthday cakes, even traveling to Lodi, California to make the wedding cake for her son, Tony’s, wedding. Soon after, Etta expanded her skills in the kitchen, as she and John became proprietors of Rosie’s Restaurant in Palisade, Colorado. An opportunity soon followed to serve Colorado travelers and truckers; John and Etta owned and operated Rosie’s at Cameo for more than 15 years.  Etta never met a stranger; locals and truckers from far and wide enjoyed her beautiful smile and quick wit. She mentored and mothered employees of all ages – always taking the time to celebrate their individual lives. She also prided herself in decorating and throwing parties for all holidays and seasons. Always up for a new challenge, Etta and John jumped into the trucking business in 2000, and built their trucking firm, Sierra Ranch Corporation. Etta was active in their business up until her recent illness in November 2015. Etta, John and their beloved dog, Bitsy, operated the trucking company, where their drivers came to be their extended family, and their business associates trusted and respected their professional relationships.
Her love for travel grew through the years – she and her sister, Shirley, especially loved to travel to Maui, Hawaii. Although she loved to spend her time in Maui shopping and enjoying the island activities, the highlight of each trip was spending quality time with her baby sister. She was also an avid sports fan with a special spot in her heart for basketball.
Etta Jane is survived by her husband John Hill of 54 years; son, Tony (Cindy) Hill of Lodi, CA; daughters, Cindy Hill and Sally Hill of Grand Junction, CO; siblings, John (Denise) Torbert of Clinton, IL and Shirley Scogin of Wapella, IL; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; as well as many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, Dude and Dixie Torbert, her brother, Skip Torbert and her great granddaughter Breiana Jamison.

I am so saddened to hear of my Aunt Etta's passing.  She was a sweet lady who was loved by many.  She gave so much encouragement to those who knew her.  I will miss her.  My heart goes out to Uncle Johnny and cousins Tony, Sally and Cindy and to all the grandchildren, great grandchildren and extended families.  Sending prayers and love, Betty Hill
