George Joseph Domet, 84, husband, father and grandfather, passed away on the early morning of Tuesday, April 26. A long-time resident of Grand Junction and member of Fellowship Church, George battled Alzheimer's Disease, and with the excellent living environment of Aspen Ridge, and later the help of Hospice Care, he led a happy, dignified and pain-free life. The Family wishes to thank all the caregivers and staff who made George's life so much better.
Born in Los Angeles in 1931 to a circus-performing mother and a popular vocalist for a father, George set his sights far away from Hollywood, serving as an Airman during the Korean War, on special assignment in Morocco. Upon his discharge, George began work as a draftsman for Garrett Air Research and was married to Bonnie, who gave him his two daughters, Michelle and Denise.
After his marriage ended, George began to work his way up the ranks at his employers, during which time he met the love of his life, Valerie. Together they would create their own firm, Merit Engineering, which for 20 years served the greater Los Angeles and Phoenix areas with projects in Aerospace, Defense, Hospital, School and major Industrial applications. George and Valerie retired from the LA area in 1995, and adopted the beautiful Grand Valley as George’s last home, and final resting place..
A consummate salesman, George continued to contribute to business ventures in Grand Junction, Phoenix and Los Angeles, until he found a place to volunteer at Fellowship Church. When he finally fully retired, he remained active at Fellowship as an usher, and as a volunteer at Mesa Mall, and at Habitat for Humanity’s ReStore Shop. Later still, he was a permanent fixture at Senior Daybreak for almost two years. But through it all, there was God, Country, Family … and Golf. George was passionate about golf, and was known to travel great distances for a chance at a special course, but he always said he enjoyed Bookcliff Country Club and Lincoln Park the most.
He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Valerie, of Grand Junction, his sister Rosemary, of Los Angeles, daughters Michelle and Denise, of the greater Los Angeles area, step-daughter Laura, of Grand Junction, and grandchildren Kelly and Casey, who live in the Los Angeles area. In lieu of flowers, the family is asking for donations to be made to Senior Daybreak by Hilltop, with thanks. A memorial for George will be held at 11 a.m., followed by a luncheon, on Wednesday, May 11, at Fellowship Church in Grand Junction. Promptly at 3 p.m. on the 11th, George will receive full military honors and be interred at Veteran's Memorial Cemetery of Western Colorado.
