Harold James Johnson, Sr. passed away at the Valley Manor Care Center, Montrose, CO December 4, 2025 just 18 days before his 102nd birthday. Previously Harold resided at the Presbyterian Manor, Newton, KS. The family extends their gratitude to both for the excellent care they provided.
Harold was born December 22, 1923 near Sedgewick, Kansas to Barclay and Minnie Johnson. He graduated in 1942 from Peabody High School, Peabody, Kansas, and before joining the US Navy Harold married Edith Ilene Bundy, August 28, 1942. They were married for 77 years before her passing. With the US Navy he served in the South Pacific during World War II as a Petty Officer.
Harold was predeceased by his wife, Edith Bundy Johnson; his parents; sisters Marion Waco, Imogene Rimbey, Mae Deanne Blankley, Lois Rappuhn; brothers Richard Johnson and Eddie Johnson; and granddaughter Mona Johnson.
He is survived by a sister, Joyce Parsons of Las Vegas, NV; son Harold, Jr. and wife Tina of Chapel Hill, NC; daughter Carolyn Johnson and husband Dennis Kalfas of Citrus Heights, CA; son Fred Johnson and wife Lynette of Grand Junction, CO; son Alan Johnson and wife Dee of Phoenix, AZ; grandsons Trey Johnson, Chad Johnson, Jason Alexander, and David Alexander; great grandchildren Jeremy Owenby, Nathaniel Owenby, Jacob Johnson, Isabelle Johnson, Alana Alexander and Patrick Alexander.
Harold lived in the Peabody community a large part of his life and will be remembered as someone who easily made friends and enriched their lives in all 7 of the states where he lived during his lifetime. He will be remembered for his involvement in the Methodist Church, Scouting, civic organizations, the American Legion and Peabody youth sports among other activities. A favorite pastime was baking all kinds of goodies which he happily shared with all. Harold was an avid outdoorsman. When he wasn’t camping, hunting or fishing you could find him on the golf course.
Early in his career Harold worked with the Southern Pacific Railroad in CA and the Santa Fe Railroad in Newton, KS. He served the public through the US Postal Service with duties including city and rural mail carrier.
It’s not unusual to find at least one house on each block in Peabody where he decorated and beautified homes by painting interior and exterior and wallpapering. Towns in Iowa and Minnesota also benefited from Harold’s decorating skills.
In recognition of his contributions to the youth and beautification of Peabody, the Peabody Museum Complex fountain was refurbished in his name.
Expressions of sympathy may be sent to his daughter, Carolyn Johnson, who will share with the other children.
Carolyn Johnson,
